Cowgirls Fall Short in NCAA Title Match

The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team is the NCAA National Runner-Up following a 4-3 falter to Stanford in the title match on Tuesday. OSU’s run concluded after reaching the championship match for the first time in school history along with being the first women’s tennis Big 12 squad to advance to the final match.

The Cowgirls concluded the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 29-5 and conference mark of 9-0.

Oklahoma State opened the match in compelling fashion, sweeping the doubles point in the process. Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic topped Krista Hardebeck and Caroline Lampi, 6-1, while No. 43 ranked Maria Alvarez and Kelsey Laurente clinched the point for OSU with a 6-3 win over fifth-ranked Taylor Davidson and Caroline Doyle.

Despite heading into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Stanford proved victorious in four of six matches, ultimately taking the match. The Cardinal earned wins at the second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions, while Oklahoma State picked up wins at the first and third positions.

Stanford pulled even at one with a straight set victory at the fourth position. Forty-seventh ranked Adamovic put the Cowgirls back on top 2-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over No. 25 Carol Zhao at the top position. OSU added another point as Viktoriya Lushkova took down Doyle by the tally of 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The Cardinal knotted the match at three with victories at the fifth and sixth courts, leaving the match to be decided at the second singles player. A hard-fought match which went deep into the third set, OSU’s Babic ultimately fell to Taylor Davidson, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

A number of Cowgirls will take to the courts again, as the NCAA individual tennis championships begin on Wednesday in Tulsa.
