Big 12 baseball had its best preseason showing since 2014 as eight student-athletes garnered award recognition heading into the start of the 2017 campaign.

TCU’s Luken Baker, the 2016 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, led all honorees with five preseason nods, including three first team selections. Baker led the league with a .379 batting average and returns this season as a designated hitter for the league’s preseason favorite and top-ranked Horned Frogs. Teammates Evan Skoug and Elliott Barzilli earned five and four preseason honors, respectively. Skoug was named a First Team All-American by D1Baseball.com.

Brian Howard and Durbin Feltman appeared on three preseason lists, highlighted by Howard’s Collegiate Baseball First Team selection. Troy Montemayor (Baylor), Tyler Buffett (Oklahoma State) and Davis Martin (Texas Tech) also earned preseason recognition by multiple publications. Both Buffett and Montemayor received nods from Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA.

The 2017 Big 12 baseball season begins on February 17, with conference play opening the weekend of March 17.
