ISU, OSU Win Cross Country Titles

The Iowa State Cyclones and Oklahoma State Cowgirls won the 2019 Men’s and Women’s Big 12 Cross Country Championships, respectively. The Men’s title is Iowa State’s third in a row, while the Women’s title is the Cowgirls’ first since 2015.

The Women’s race made Big 12 history as the top three teams were separated by just four points, the closest Women’s Big 12 Championship ever. Oklahoma State’s 52 points were enough for the team crown, beating out Texas and West Virginia who tallied 54 and 56 points each. Meanwhile, The Iowa State men dominated the field, finishing with a score of 34 and five of the top-10 placing runners. OSU came in second with 58 points and UT took third with 72.

Individually, ISU’s Edwin Kurgat finished first in the Men’s 8K with a time of 23:36.3, outlasting Oklahoma State’s Isai Rodriguez, the second-place runner, to clinch the individual Big 12 title for the second consecutive season.

On the women’s side, Cailie Logue of Iowa State won the Women’s 6K with a 20:08.2 time, narrowly edging Taylor Somers of Oklahoma State by just three-tenths of a second. This is Logue’s second individual Big 12 title in as many years.

Additionally, the top 15 finishers in each race earned All-Big 12 honors.

Big 12 Cross Country teams will head to NCAA Regional competition in their respective regions on November 15. The NCAA Division I National Championships will be held in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 23.
