For the first time in his illustrious career, Iowa State senior standout Edwin Kurgat won the NCAA Men’s Cross Country National Championship. Kurgat crossed the line with a time of 30:32.7 in the 10K race, five seconds faster than the second-place finisher, to claim the individual title.
This is the Big 12’s first individual cross country national champion since winning both the men’s and women’s titles in 2012 (ISU’s Betsy Saina and TTU’s Kennedy Kithuka). As a team, the Cyclones took fourth with 211 total points.
Along with Kurgat, Texas junior Sam Worley earned All-American honors by placing in the top-30. Worley ran a 31:12.4 to finish in 27th overall individually, while the Longhorns took 25th as a team.
On the women’s side, the Conference received three All-American awards with ISU’s Cailie Logue and OSU’s Molly Born and Taylor Somers coming in 15th, 16th and 18th, respectively. Logue led the way for the Big 12 women with a 20:26.8 time in the 6K. The Longhorns, who placed 30th, represented the Conference in the women’s meet.
