Student-athletes from Baylor, Iowa State, TCU and West Virginia collected Big 12 soccer honors for their performances in week 5.
West Virginia’s Stefany Ferrer-VanGinkel earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while TCU’s Brandi Peterson was named Defensive Player of the Week. Iowa State’s Jordan Silkowitz registered Goalkeeper of the Week, while Baylor forward Mackenzie Anthony was tabbed Freshman of the Week.
Ferrer-vanGinkel earned the game-winning goal in WVU's 2-1 win over Texas Tech on Oct. 9. Her conference-leading third goal of the season came in the 82nd minute to seal the road win. Ferrer-vanGinkel finished the night with three shots - all on goal - and helped the Mountaineers improve to 4-1 on the year and into first place in the conference standings.
Peterson, who has played every minute this season, helped the Horned Frog defense deflect 18 shots at No. 4 Oklahoma State. She scored her first career goal just 30 seconds into overtime to give TCU its first-ever win over a top-five ranked team.
Silkowitz recorded her first clean sheet as a Cyclone in Iowa State's 1-0 victory at Oklahoma. She collected the first shutout by an ISU goalkeeper since Sep. 8, 2019. It was also Iowa State's first shutout in Big 12 play since Oct. 25, 2018. She made five saves on the night, the second-most she's had in a game this season.
Anthony netted her first career goal in the 20th minute vs. Kansas on Friday. It marked the first goal against the Jayhawks this season and only the eighth first-half goal allowed by KU in its last 27 matches. It was also the first goal by a Big 12 opponent allowed by Kansas since last season's Big 12 Championship semifinal. Anthony finished with an assist on Taylor Moon's goal in the 54th minute, giving her a team-high three points on the night.
All four recipients this week are first-time honorees.
