No. 14/12 Oklahoma State tops the Big 12 teams in the
Associated Press and
USA TODAY Sports coaches polls, followed by No. 17/17 Iowa State, No. 19/19 Oklahoma and No. 22/NR Texas.
A pair of Big 12 standouts lead the nation in returns. Baylor’s Trestan Ebner paces the FBS with an average of 38.6 yards per kick return, while K-State’s Phillip Brooks leads in punt return average with 25.1 yards.
Kansas State and TCU are the top-two red zone offenses in the NCAA. TCU leads the country with a 1.077 percentage followed by K-State at 1.050. West Virginia is No. 13 at .962.
Oklahoma State leads the nation with a third-down conversion defense of 18.1%. The Cowboys have allowed just 13 conversions on 72 attempts. OSU is on track to establish the Big 12 single-season record.
West Virginia has the nation’s best defense amongst teams with five or more games played (255.7) and currently ranks No. 4 in the NCAA’s metric. Other top-30 defenses include: No. 12 Oklahoma State (299.8), No. 26 Oklahoma (353.5) and No. 30 Iowa State (359.2).
Team-By-Team Notables
With his two touchdown catches against TCU,
Baylor’s Ben Sims became the first BU tight end since 2017 with multiple touchdowns in a season. It was his first career two-touchdown game.
Iowa State’s victory over Kansas matches the best five-game start (4-1) in conference play in program history (2017). The Cyclones are 13-2 in October since 2017, the second-most such wins by an autonomy conference team in that span.
Per ESPN Stats and Information, ISU’s
Breece Hall is the fifth autonomy conference and second Big 12 player since 2005 to have 100 yards and a rush TD in each of his team’s first six games (Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma, 2006; Tevin Coleman, Indiana, 2014; Leonard Fournette, LSU, 2015; Bryce Love, Stanford, 2017). Hall finished the day by matching a career-high 185 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
Kansas’ Kenny Logan Jr.’s 100-yard kick return for a touchdown against Iowa State was the first of his career. Logan finished with 124 kickoff return yards in Saturday’s game. The 100-yard return is the longest return of the season and is tied for second in program history.
Kansas State recorded nine tackles for loss at West Virginia. It was the most by the Wildcats since recording 11 at TCU in the 2016 regular-season finale. Eight players had at least a half TFL, including team leader Drew Wiley, who had a career-high 2.5 stops behind the line.
Oklahoma’s 62 points in the
win at Texas Tech were its most since scoring 70 against South Dakota last season (Sept. 7). It was OU’s most points against a Big 12 opponent since a 66-33 win over Baylor in 2018.
Oklahoma earned its 40th win under head coach
Lincoln Riley. At 40-8, Riley is one of just seven Sooners head coaches to reach 40 wins. Only Barry Switzer and Bud Wilkinson reached 40 victories at OU in fewer games (Bob Stoops also did it in 48 games).
Sooner defensive back
Tre Norwood made his first start of the season and intercepted two passes in the first quarter, his second and third career INTs. He is the first OU player with two interceptions in a game since linebacker Jordan Evans in 2016 vs. Baylor.
Oklahoma State quarterback
Spencer Sanders became the first Cowboy since Mason Rudolph in 2017 to complete 400 passing yards and four touchdowns in a contest. Both were career highs for the redshirt sophomore.
TCU recorded 11 tackles for loss in
the victory at Baylor, the most in a game since Nov. 4, 2017, when it had 12 against Texas. Ten Horned Frogs had at least one tackle for loss.

Derius Davis had a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown. It was his second career punt return for a score, which is tied for 17th all-time in the Big 12 record books.
Texas forced four turnovers (1 INT/3 FR) at Oklahoma State and didn't turn the ball over in the
overtime win. The Longhorns are 5-0 when turning their opponents over at least four times under coach Tom Herman. The Longhorns lead the Big 12 with 77 takeaways since the start of the 2017 season.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, the last time Texas erased a double-digit deficit to beat an AP top-10 team was in 2008, in its 45-35 win over No. 1 Oklahoma. The last time Texas beat a top-10 team on the road came in 2010, when UT beat No. 5 Nebraska.

Joseph Ossai was named the
Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week after helping Texas upset No. 6 Oklahoma State 41-34 in overtime. He recorded 12 tackles (7 solo) and three quarterback sacks, while recovering two fumbles and forcing one.

Sam Ehlinger is the first player in Texas history with 20 passing touchdowns through his team's first six games of a season, per
ESPN Stats & Info. Ehlinger went 7-for-9 with two passing TDs in the fourth quarter and overtime. Ehlinger now has an FBS-best eight passing touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime this season.
In the second quarter,
Texas Tech’s Henry Colombi found Travis Koontz for a 75-yard touchdown pass. The play was a career long for both Colombi and Koontz, and ties the longest play from scrimmage this year for the Red Raiders, tying Thompson’s 75-yard rushing score against Texas.
With 184 rushing yards in the
win against Kansas State,
West Virginia now has totaled 1,032 yards on the ground through six games in 2020. West Virginia finished with 879 rushing yards as a team last season.

Leddie Brown finished with 102 yards on 24 carries for his fourth 100-yard game of the season and sixth of his career.
