Texas Tech’s Lisa Mays and Ilgiz Valiev swept the women’s and men’s Big 12 Tennis Player of the Week honors for Week 9.
A freshman playing the No. 1 court, Mays again led the way for the Lady Raiders in knocking off two ranked Big 12 opponents. She was a combined 4-0 through the weekend, 2-0 in both singles and doubles. Against K-State, Mays defeated No. 46 Karine-Marion Job in three sets, which included a third-set tiebreaker. Also in singles, Mays knocked out KU’s No. 81 Sonia Smagina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. In doubles, Mays and teammate Kaitlin Staines shutout the Wildcats’ No. 46 duo of Job and Linares. Against the Jayhawks, Mays and Staines ousted the No. 1 court pair of Smagina and Karvouni.
Valiev, a senior for the Red Raider men, is in the midst of a six-match win streak. From the No. 2 court last weekend, he easily disposed of his opponent from No. 35 San Diego in straight sets. On the doubles court, Valiez helped take No. 3 court victories over San Diego and No. 26 Oklahoma. In the 4-1 win over the Sooners, Valiez held off Alex Martinez Puigdellos in an unfinished duel that went three sets.
