Individual postseason awards, All-Big 12 honors and position champions were announced for the 2021 Big 12 Tennis season.
Bunyawi Thamchaiwat of Oklahoma State headlined the women’s awards as the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Player of the Year. Texas Tech’s Kaitlin Staines was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year and Peyton Stearns earned Freshman of the Year. Iowa State’s Boomer Saia was selected as Coach of the Year.
Thamchaiwat is the first Cowgirl to win Player of the Year since Viktoriya Lushkova in 2015. The junior finished 18-4 overall and 6-1 in the Big 12 regular-season and was ranked No. 26 in the latest ITA singles rankings. She and teammate Ayumi Miyamoto was ranked No. 57 in doubles after finishing 10-6.
Staines, a transfer from Tennessee, was No. 123 in the ITA rankings and completed the year with 10 singles victories to earn Newcomer of the Year. She and doubles teammate Lisa Mays ranked No. 65 in the ITA doubles ledger. She is the second Red Raider to win the award and first since 2001.
Stearns became the ninth Longhorn to be named Freshman of the Year. She is 37th in the latest ITA rankings while owning a 14-6 overall singles record and a 4-1 mark in Conference play. Stearns, along with freshman Charlotte Chavatipon, are 16-2 in doubles this season and rank No. 47.
Coach Saia led the No. 36-ranked Cyclones to their best season in program history finishing with a 14-8 mark overall and 4-4 in league play. The third-year head coach guided Iowa State to its first NCAA Championship appearance and tournament win as ISU knocked off No. 24 South Carolina in the opening round. The Coach of the Year honor is the first for Iowa State.
The Texas women paced the way with seven All-Big 12 selections and four All-Freshman honorees. Stearns andThamchaiwat were unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selections. Eight individuals were bestowed as Big 12 position champions which goes to individuals that have the most wins in a position (minimum five matches).
On the men’s side, Luc Fomba from TCU collected Player of the Year honors, while Baylor’s Charlie Broom earned Newcomer of the Year. Freshman Micah Braswell of Texas was tabbed the Freshman of the Year. Longhorn coach Bruce Berque earned Coach of the Year recognition.
Fomba has produced a 21-8 mark and No. 17 ITA singles ranking to earn Big 12 Men’s Tennis Player of the Year. He and teammate Alastair Gray are No. 2 in the nation with a 13-7 record in doubles. The sophomore is the third Horned Frog to win the accolade since 2017.
After spending four seasons at Dartmouth, Charlie Broom strung together an impressive debut season with the Bears. He finished 4-1 at the No. 5 spot in league play and has helped BU reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Championship. Broom is the seventh Bear to win the distinction.
Longhorn Braswell has produced a 33-6 singles mark this season to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He is No. 38 in the latest ITA rankings and the fifth Texas player to win the award.
Coach Berque guided Texas to a share of the Big 12 regular-season title, as the Longhorns advanced to the Big 12 Championship title match. The No. 4-ranked Longhorns are in the NCAA Championship Round of 16 after a pair of victories over Northern Arizona and Northwestern. This is the second award for Berque and the ninth overall for Texas.
The Baylor men led the way with six All-Big 12 selections in singles and doubles. All five members on the singles first team were unanimous selections: Adrian Boitan (Baylor), Matias Soto (Baylor), Matej Vocel (Oklahoma State), Luc Fomba (TCU), Alastair Gray (TCU) and Eliot Spizzirri (Texas). Nine individuals were honored with Big 12 position champion awards, which is awarded to those individuals who finish with the most victories in a position (minimum of three matches).
