IRVING, Texas- Texas’ Ivan Melendez (Player), Oklahoma State’s Justin Campbell (Pitcher) and Texas Tech’s Andrew Morris (Newcomer) were tabbed by a five-person media panel for Big 12 baseball weekly awards, for games ending March 27.
Melendez had a streak where he reached base in 13 consecutive plate appearances, and ended the week with a .625 batting average, 2.152 OPS and four home runs. He started Big 12 play with hits in eight consecutive at-bats, collecting a double and three home runs in that span, highlighted by a 5-for-5 game with four runs scored and two home runs against Texas Tech. The El Paso, Texas native added five walks and four RBI as he picked up his second Player of the Week honor of the season and the third of his career.
Campbell tossed the Big 12’s first complete game of the season Friday, scattering three hits and a walk while allowing two runs in the Cowboys’ 4-2 win over Kansas. Campbell retired the last 12 Jayhawks he faced, and struck out nine batters on the evening, which matches the most by any pitcher in Big 12 play this season. It is Campbell’s first Pitcher of the Week honor of the season and the third of his career.
Morris threw six innings in Texas Tech’s Friday night, extra-inning victory over Texas, allowing six hits and a single run. After giving up a leadoff home run to the game’s first batter, the Colorado Mesa transfer settled down to strike out seven and keep the Longhorns off the board for the remainder of his outing. It is Morris’ first Big 12 Weekly Honor.
