TULSA, Oklahoma — Missouri leads the team standings after the first day of the Big 12 Wrestling Championship, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Tigers collected 109.5 points, placing four wrestlers in the finals.
Oklahoma sits in second with 93.5 points, sending one athlete to the championship round. Oklahoma State follows in third with 90 points and will have four wrestlers compete for titles. Northern Iowa (85 points) and Iowa State (82.5) round out the top five, respectively. The Panthers will have three competitors in the finals while the Cyclones will send one.
West Virginia (sixth, 56 points) had two participants advance to the final, while North Dakota State (T-7th, 54 points), South Dakota State (T-7th, 54 points), Wyoming (ninth, 43 points), Air Force (10th, 34.5 points), and Northern Colorado (11th, 31.5 points) will each have one wrestler represent them in the championship round. Utah Valley (12th, 30 points) will have two wrestlers compete for a third place finish during session three.
After an intense first two rounds of competition, action ramped up during the afternoon semifinal session. UNI’s fourth-seeded Brody Teske, the reigning Big 12 champion in the 125-pound weight class, took down Oklahoma’s Joey Prata with a 6-3 decision after starting the day with a 6:06 fall victory over Air Force’s Jared Van Vleet and a close 6-5 decision against Iowa State’s Kysen Terukina. Teske will face WVU’s top-seeded Killian Cardinale, who breezed into the final with an 8-0 major decision against UNC’s Jace Koelzer and an 8-1 win over OSU’s fourth-seeded Trevor Mastrogiovanni.
The No. 1-seed at 133 pounds, OSU’s Daton Fix posted back-to-back technical falls in the first session to advance to the semifinal against Iowa State’s fifth-seeded Ramazan Attasauov, who started the day with an 8-0 major decision against WVU’s Garett Lautzenheiser. Fix defeated Attasauov via major decision 13-3 to set up the final with UNI’s second-seeded Kyle Biscoglia, who picked up a 10-2 win over OU’s Tony Madrigal before pulling off a sudden victory against Utah Valley’s Haiden Drury in the semifinal.
In the 141-pound weight class, Mizzou’s fourth-seeded Allan Hart will face off against No. 3 Andrew Alirez from UNC in the championship match after taking down Bison Dylan Droegemueller via major decision, 13-1. Hart started the day in the quarterfinal round, winning a 9-2 decision over Utah Valley’s Ty Smith. Meanwhile, Alirez posted 8-1 and 7-2 decision wins over Falcon Cody Phippen and Panther Cael Happel, respectively, before completing a 5-3 upset against SDSU’s second-seeded Clay Carlson.
Kaden Gfeller, Oklahoma State’s No. 1 seed in the 149-pound weight class, pinned Jackrabbit Daniel Kimball, 4:12, and won a 9-0 major decision against NDSU’s Gavin Sax before completing an 11-5 win over UNI’s Colin Realbuto. Gfeller will take on Bedlam foe, second-seeded Willie McDougald, who defeated Cyclone Jarrett Degan 5-4 in the semifinal after an 8-6 decision against AFA’s Dylan Martinez in the quarterfinal.
Reigning national champion at 157 pounds and top-seeded Cyclone David Carr will defend his title in the final after breezing through the first two rounds. Carr advanced to the semifinal with a 4:54 fall against Air Force’s Giano Petrucelli, a technical fall victory over Utah Valley’s Jaxon Garoutte and secured his place in the championship match with a 7-4 decision against Wyoming’s fifth-seeded Jacob Wright. Carr will take on second-seeded Jared Franek of North Dakota State, who won an 8-4 decision over Northern Iowa’s Derek Holschlag before advancing to the final with a 5-4 win against Sooners’ sixth-seeded Justin Thomas.
The battle for the 165-pound champion will be decided between the top two seeds as Mizzou’s Keegan O’Toole and WVU’s Peyton Hall will wrestle in the final. O’Toole posted a 6-1 decision against OU’s Joe Grello and an 11-3 major decision against NDSU’s Luke Weber to secure his place in the title match. Hall completed consecutive major decision wins over Wyoming’s Cooper Voorhees and ISU’s Isaac Judge before defeating UNI’s Austin Yant, 4-1, in the semifinal.
At 174 pounds, Tigers’ sixth-seeded Peyton Mocco upset the No. 2 seed, Jackrabbit Cade DeVos, in a 2-0 decision to set up a matchup with the No.1 seed, OSU’s Dustin Plott. Mocco reached the semifinal after a 13-4 major decision over Wolverine Kekana Fouret and a 6:39 pin of Sooners’ three-seeded Anthony Mantanona. Plott picked up major decision wins against NDSU’s Riley Habisch and WVU’s Dennis Robin before defeating UNI’s Lance Runyon 3-1 in the semifinal.
No. 1-seeded Panther, Parker Keckeisen bulldozed through his opponents with three major decision wins, defeating Falcon Jacob Thompson 14-5, Bison Deanthony Parker 12-4 and OSU’s Dakota Geer 16-6. Keckeisen will take on Missouri’s Jeremiah Kent, the six-seed, in the championship match. Kent upset Wyoming’s third-seeded Tate Samuelson in a 13-1 major decision win and then took down second-seeded Cyclone, Marcus Coleman 6-2.
Wyoming’s top-seeded Stephen Buchanan secured his place in the 197-pound final, defeating Mountaineer Jackson Moomau via fall, 5:00, and taking down Wolverine Evan Bockman with a 12-4 major decision. The Cowboy then pinned Iowa State’s fourth-seeded Yonger Bastida, getting the 6:57 fall. Buchanan will face No. 2-seeded Jackrabbit Tanner Sloan who grabbed a 2:15 fall over AFA’s Kayne Hutchinson and grabbed a 5-1 decision against UNC’s Alan Clothier before posting an 8-0 major decision versus NDSU’s Owen Pentz.
Finally in the heavyweight category, No. 1-seeded Falcon Wyatt Hendrickson did what he’s done all season when he kicked off the day with a 2:04 fall, pinning Northern Colorado’s Jacob Seely. He then picked up an 11-5 decision over OU’s Josh Heindselman on his way to pinning SDSU’s AJ Nevills, completing a 2:05 fall. He’ll face Oklahoma State’s Luke Surber, the seven-seed. Surber took down UNI’s Tyrell Gordon with a 13-3 major decision and took a sudden victory against two-seeded Tiger Zach Elam before pulling off a 3-2 decision versus ISU’s Sam Schuyler.
Third, fifth and seventh place matches will begin at 12 p.m. and will be available to watch live in Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The championship round is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
