IRVING, Texas — Iowa State’s Jason Gomez and Oklahoma’s Payden Montana were named Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week after taking gold in their respective events during competition last weekend.
Gomez took first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:47.12 at the Sun Angel Classic on Saturday, hosted by Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona. The run was Gomez’s best outdoor time as a Cyclone and moves him into the No. 5 spot nationally in the event this season. The time ranked sixth in Iowa State history in the 800 meters.
Montana won the women’s shot put invite at the Hurricane Alumni Invitational with a throw of 58 feet, 8 inches (17.88 meters). The mark pushed the junior into the top spot in the Conference, tied her for first in the nation, and eighth in the world rankings. The event was Montana’s second first-place throw of the season and was a personal best, ranking third in Oklahoma shot put history.
