2022 Tennis Postseason Awards Released

IRVING, Texas — Individual postseason awards, All-Big 12 honors, and position champions were announced for the 2022 Big 12 Tennis season.

Texas’ Peyton Stearns headlined the women’s awards earning Big 12 Player of the Year. Oklahoma’s Layne Sleeth was tabbed Big 12 Newcomer of the Year while Oklahoma State’s Mhai Sawangkaew collected the Freshman of the Year award. Sooners head coach Audra Cohen was voted Big 12 Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year.

Stearns, who was voted Most Outstanding Player at the Big 12 Tennis Championship and finished the season as the No. 1 singles position player, is 23-3 overall on the season, 20-1 in dual play and 8-0 in the Big 12. In doubles play, Stearns and partner Allura Zamarripa finished 9-2 overall and in dual play and 6-1 in conference play. The Mason, Ohio native is ranked No. 2 in the ITA Rankings for singles and No. 11 in doubles along with Zamarripa.

Sleeth, who transferred to Oklahoma from Florida, posted a 17-4 overall and dual play record and 7-1 Big 12 record. The Ontario native is ranked No. 9 in the ITA rankings. Sleeth and doubles partner Alexandra Pisareva finished as the position champions in the No. 2 spot with a 5-2 Big 12 record.

Ranked No. 33 in the ITA, Sawangkaew finished 17-2 overall and in dual play while posting a 6-2 conference record. Sawangkaew and doubles partner Martina Zerulo are ranked 72nd in the ITA with a 9-4 overall and dual play record.

In her sixth year at the helm of Oklahoma women’s tennis, Cohen led the Sooners to their first regular-season title, finishing undefeated in Big 12 play at 9-0. OU wrapped up the regular season with a 27-2 overall record and did not drop a match at home.

On the men’s side, Baylor’s Adrian Boitan was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Texas’ Pierre-Yves Bailly received Freshman of the Year. TCU’s Juan Carlos Aguilar and Oklahoma State’s Tyler Zink earned Co-Newcomer of the Year honors. Horned Frogs’ head coach David Roditi was voted Coach of the Year.

Boitan did not drop a match during the spring until the Big 12 Championship final, posting a record of 17-1 at the No. 1 singles position. The junior is ranked No. 4 in the ITA rankings.

Bailly finished the season 11-7 overall, 10-6 in dual play, and 3-1 in conference play. The Longhorn is ranked No. 35 in the ITA in singles.

Aguilar wrapped up the season with a 14-7 overall and dual play record and 4-0 in Big 12 play. The Bolivia native is ranked No. 14 in the ITA in singles.

Zink posted a 9-7 record overall and in dual play with a 2-2 conference record. The transfer from Georgia is ranked No. 93 in the ITA.

Roditi led the Frogs to a second-straight regular-season Big 12 title, finishing with a 5-0 conference record. TCU earned the ITA National Indoor title in February with a win over then-No.3 Tennessee. Ranked No. 1 nationally for the second-straight week, the Horned Frogs are 23-4 on the season with a 12-4 home record and a perfect road slate at 7-0.
