BU’s Pineda, UT’s Melendez, OSU’s Stone & Ehrhard Earn Final Baseball Awards

IRVING, Texas — After the final series of the regular season, Baylor’s Jack Pineda (Co-Player), Texas’ Ivan Melendez (Co-Player), and Oklahoma State’s Mitchell Stone (Pitcher) and Zach Ehrhard (Newcomer) received the Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week honors.

Pineda led the Bears this week with a .471 batting average and eight hits, which tie for seventh and second in the Conference, respectively. The junior shortstop also tied for the conference most by scoring seven runs over four games and hitting three home runs, including two lead-off shots to start the midweek against Stephen F. Austin and Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State. Pineda’s 18 total bases and 1.059 slugging percentage led the Baylor squad. Defensively, Pineda aided in six double plays, extending Baylor’s national lead.

Melendez set new Big 12 records with his fifth Player of the Week honor of the season and the sixth of his career. The junior infielder batted .412 with hits in all four games, driving a double, three homers and nine RBI. Melendez’s third homer of the week was his 28th of the season, which ties the Texas record.

Stone came into the game in relief against Baylor on Saturday to propel OSU to a series-clinching win. The junior lefty entered the game at the start of the second inning with the Cowboys trailing 3-0 and stabilized things by working 6 1/3 innings. Stone allowed just three hits and one earned run while striking out five, his highest total in conference play this season. He earned the win, retiring the side in order four times.

Ehrhard led Oklahoma State with three doubles, seven runs and 16 total bases, hitting .500 over weekend. The freshman had a career-high three hits in game two against the Bears and five of his seven hits during the series went for extra bases. Erhard entered the game with just one home run in his first 46 games but blasted two in Waco in back-to-back contests.
