ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 3 seed Oklahoma (34-20) defeated No. 6 seed West Virginia (33-21), 6-4, to close out the first round of play at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at Globe Life Field.
After a scoreless first inning, John Spikerman kicked things off for the Sooners when he singled to center field so Wallace Clark could cross home plate, putting OU on the board first. Directly after, Peyton Graham blasted a grand slam to extend the lead to 5-0. The grand slam was the first at the Big 12 Championship since TCU’s Josh Watson in 2019.
Oklahoma scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Tanner Tredaway singled to right center notching an RBI. The Sooners led, 6-0, heading into the fifth.
After three innings with no runs scored by either team, West Virginia claimed their first run of the game during the top of the eighth inning when JJ Wetherholt scored on a wild pitch. The Mountaineers trailed the Sooners 6-1, heading into the ninth.
To kick off the ninth, Grant Hussey hit a home run to the right field to cut the deficit to four runs for the Mountaineers. JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run home run to right-center to cut the lead to two before WVU’s rally came to an end.
Jacob Watters (L, 3-7) pitched the first 2.0 innings for West Virginia, giving up six hits, five runs, and threw three strikeouts. He was relieved by Carlson Reed who pitched 4.1 innings giving up three hits, one run and added five strikeouts. The Mountaineer’s closer, Zach Ottinger, pitched 1.2 innings giving up no hits, or runs and one strikeout.
Carson Atwood pitched 3.0 innings for the Sooners, giving up one hit, no runs and tossed two strikeouts before Carter Campbell entered. Campbell (W, 3-0) pitched 2.0 innings giving up three hits, no runs, and added a strikeout when relieved by Chazz Martinez. Nicholas Andrews and Trevin Michael closed out the game for Oklahoma.
Oklahoma will go toe-to-toe with No. 2 seed Texas Tech on Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU while West Virginia will face off against No. 7 seed Kansas State in an elimination game on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ earlier in the day at 12:30 p.m. CT.
