TCU’s Davis, TTU’s Girton and Bazzell Take Home First Big 12 Baseball Weekly Honors

TCU’s Austin Davis (Player) plus Texas Tech’s Brendan Girton (Pitcher) and Kevin Bazzell (Newcomer) earned Big 12 baseball weekly awards for the first week of the season.

Davis led the Horned Frogs to a pair of top 25 victories at Globe Life Field, hitting .538 with a 1.461 OPS, five runs and five RBIs. Against then-No. 10 Vanderbilt, he worked a seven-pitch walk with two outs to load the bases, as the Horned Frogs took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning, part of a 1-for-3 day with two walks. The Orlando, Florida native went 3-for-6 with a home run against then-No. 9 Arkansas, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. He went 3-for-4 against Missouri and stole his third base of the weekend. He drove in a run and reached base at least three times in all three games in Arlington.

Girton tossed six innings of scoreless one-hit relief, striking out six Gonzaga hitters as he earned the victory in Texas Tech’s 8-4 season-opening win. The Gage, Oklahoma native entered with the Red Raiders trailing 4-1 in the third inning, and then held the Bulldogs to a 1-of-18 at the plate. It is Girton’s first Pitcher of the Week honor.

Bazzell hit. 417 in the first three games of the Red Raiders’ eventual sweep of Gonzaga, posting a 1.262 OPS and three extra-base hits. The Rockwall, Texas native and Dallas Baptist transfer went 2-for-5 in his first collegiate game, and followed that up with a two-RBI effort on Saturday. In Sunday’s game, he hit a double and his first home run to claim the season’s first Newcomer of the Week honor.
