TCU Sweeps Big 12 Weekly Tennis Honors

TCU swept the Big 12 Tennis honors as Luc Fomba (men’s) and Mercedes Aristegui (women’s) garnered the first awards for the Horned Frogs in the 2023 season. It is Fomba’s third career honor and first since April 6, 2021 while Aristegui collected her second award with her first on March 3, 2021.

Fomba helped TCU become the first team in the country this season to notch consecutive road victories over ITA top-15 opponents as he added one singles win and two more doubles wins to his resume. The 28th ranked singles player boosted his overall record to 11-0 in 2023 as he has yet to surrender a set in singles or doubles this season.

In his singles match against No. 59 Shunsuke Mitsui (Tennessee), he was serving for the set and match before his teammate Tomas Jirousek earned the match clincher to leave Fomba’s match unfinished (7-5, 5-5). He had trailed 4-5 in the first set before winning three straight games for a 7-5 victory.

He achieved his first point for the Horned Frogs in doubles with teammate, Jake Fearnley, in a 7-5 win over Emile Hudd and Angel Diaz (Tennessee). Fomba then accounted for two of TCU’s four points against North Carolina with a singles point against Will Jansen (North Carolina) and a doubles point over Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay (North Carolina). The singles point was his first of the week behind a 6-4, 7-5 victory while he never trailed in his 6-4 doubles win with Fearnley over the Volunteers.

Aristegui led TCU to an undefeated weekend against two SEC opponents as she finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles. The graduate senior picked up her first singles point against Alabama’s Loudmilla Bancheikh in a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory before defeating Ole Miss’ Ludmila Kareisová 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, the No. 73 ranked player, in straight sets.

In doubles, Aristegui and partner Jade Otway defeated Alabama’s duo of Petra Sedlackova and Anna Parkhomenko 6-4. The TCU pair then finished the weekend undefeated with a win over Ole Miss’ Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher and Ludmila Kareisová.

Aristegui did not drop a single set on the weekend.
