INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Six Big 12 women’s basketball teams were selected to compete in the 2023 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, which will begin Wednesday, March 15. The 60% of Big 12 teams selected for March Madness is the highest percentage of any Division I Conference.
Iowa State (22-9) earned the Conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA field after winning the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship for the first time since 2001. The Cyclones secured the 21
st NCAA bid in their program’s history and their fourth consecutive trip. Iowa State heads to Knoxville, Tennessee to face No. 12 seed Toledo Saturday in the Seattle 3 Region.
Texas (25-9) is in the field for the ninth consecutive tournament, and was selected as a host for First-and-Second Round games in the Seattle 3 Region, beginning with a Saturday tip against No. 13 seed East Carolina. The Longhorns were Big 12 regular season co-champions, finishing the league year with a 14-4 record.
After earning a share of Big 12 regular season title, Oklahoma (25-6) was selected to its 23
rd NCAA Tournament, making its second consecutive appearance. The No. 5-seed in the Greenville 1 region, the Sooners will face No. 12 seed Portland in Los Angeles at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion on Saturday.
No. 7-seed Baylor (19-12) starts its 19
th consecutive March Madness run Saturday, in Storrs, Connecticut against No. 10-seed Alabama. The Bears’ resume was bolstered by five wins against AP Top 25 opponents.
No. 8-seed Oklahoma State (20-11) is making its 17
th NCAA Tournament appearance after a one-year absence, reaching under first-year head coach Jacie Hoyt. The Cowgirls face No. 9 seed Miami Saturday in Bloomington, Indiana for a first round game in the Greenville 2 Region.
No. 10-seed West Virginia (19-10) will face No. 7 Arizona in College Park, Maryland to open the Greenville 1 Region. The Mountaineers return to the Big Dance for the first time since 2021 in head coach Dawn Plitzuweit’s first season in Morgantown.
The Big 12 has secured six bids for the second consecutive year and has had at least five selections for the 22
nd time in 26 tournaments. In total, the Conference has amassed 153 appearances in the Championship since the league’s inception in 1996-97.
