Texas Sweeps Tennis Big 12 POTW Awards

Texas’ Eliot Spizzirri (men’s) and Sabina Zeynalova (women’s) helped the Longhorns sweep the weekly awards for the second time this season. Texas first swept the awards on January 24th with Spizzirri and Charlotte Chavatipon.

Spizzirri helped Texas to a pair of top-10 wins over No.1 TCU and No. 10 Southern California. The junior finished the weekend a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles, including three victories over top-35 opponents. In singles he defeated TCU’s No. 21-ranked Jake Fearnley (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) and USC’s No. 32-ranked Stefan Dostanic to move to 26-4 overall and 13-1 in dual matches. Spizzirri also earned two doubles wins with teammate Cleeve Harper as they won the deciding match for the doubles point against TCU’s No. 13-ranked duo of Jake Fearnley and Luc Fomba (7-6 (5)). This is the Greenwich, Connecticut native’s fourth award of the season and now has garnered the most career selections in conference history (9).

Zeynalova earned her first career Big 12 honor and is the second Longhorn women’s athlete to win it this season. She completed the week with three victories, including two straight-set singles match wins. The sophomore tallied her first singles win over ISU’s No. 53-ranked Ange Oby Kajuru (6-1,6- 3) before defeating West Virginia’s Ting-Pei Chang 6-2, 6-1. Zeynalova also collected one doubles victory with teammate Charlotte Chavatipon as they defeated WVU’s Camilla Bossi and Chang.
