Oklahoma State’s Alex Garcia (men’s) and Texas Tech’s Avelina Sayfetdinova (women’s) secured the Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week awards for the first time in their careers.
Garcia helped the Cowboys to a couple of wins this week including a victtory over No. 75 SMU. The senior collected singles wins over Wichita State’s Alejandro Jacome (6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1) and SMU’s Antonio Muniz Hidalgo (6-4, 6-4). He also secured the doubles point with doubles partner Francisco Pini with a 6-2 victory over SMU’s Kyle Sillman and Julian Steinhausen in OSU’s 4-3 ranked victory against the Mustangs.
Sayfetdinova didn’t drop a set this week as the Lady Raiders defeated UT Arlington and SMU. The sophomore started the week with a straight sets win against UT Arlington’s Sarina Reinertsen (6-2, 6-2) and a 6-2 doubles victory against the Mavericks’ Tara Gorinsek and Ana Paula Jimenez. Then clinched her team-leading fourth match this year against the Mustangs’ Taylor Johnston (6-2, 6-3) after winning the first doubles match of the day with doubles partner Metka Komac. The Lady Raiders pair finished with a 6-4 score over SMU’s Maja Makoric and Jackie Nylander (6-4). The Moscow, Russia native ranks second on the team with seven dual singles wins and six dual doubles wins this season.
