ARLINGTON, Texas – Seventh-seeded Oklahoma (31-24) took down second-seeded Oklahoma State (37-17) 9-5 in the third game of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field. The 2022 Champion Sooners now hold five consecutive wins at the Championship.
OU struck first with two RBI singles by Dakota Harris and Easton Carmichael to claim the lead 3-0 after the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Oklahoma strengthened its lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly from Kendall Pettis.
The Sooners plated three more runs in the top of the third inning after a sacrifice fly by Jackson Nicklaus, an RBI single by John Spikerman, and a wild pitch pushing Wallace Clark past home plate.
In the bottom of the third, Oklahoma State responded with three runs from an RBI double by Zach Ehrhard and a 2-run RBI single by Carson Benge.
After a silent fourth inning, Oklahoma State notched its 100th home run of the season and cut the deficit to 7-4 as Marcus Brown hit a homer to right field in the fifth inning.
OU put two more runs on the board in the seventh inning via a sacrifice bunt by Nicklaus and a bases-loaded walk for Anthony Mackenzie.
James Hitt (6-1), the winning pitcher, struck out a pair of batters and allowed two hits and one run in his 2.2 innings pitched.
Benge (2-2) threw 2.1 innings and recorded one strikeout for Oklahoma State. Benge surrendered five hits and seven runs.
Oklahoma will face the winner of game four between third-seeded West Virginia and sixth-seeded Texas Tech on Thursday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. Oklahoma State will face the loser on Thursday, May 25 at 12:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
