OSU Eliminates WVU in Thriller at 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas - The No. 2 seed Oklahoma State (38-17) narrowly defeated the No. 3 seed West Virginia (39-18) 3-2 during Game 6 of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field. The Cowboys and the Mountaineers were two of three teams to share the 2023 Big 12 regular season title. 
 
Oklahoma State took an early two-run lead with a sacrifice fly by Chase Adkison and an RBI groundout from Roc Riggio in the bottom of the first. 
 
West Virginia answered in the top of the second with a Landon Wallace double and scored on a ground out hit by Braden Barry to trim the lead to 2-1. 
 
The Mountaineers picked up one run in the top of the sixth as freshman Sam White hit an RBI groundout to bring JJ Wetherholt across the plate, tying the score at 2-2. 
 
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cowboys took the 3-2 lead off Riggio’s single to right, allowing David Mendham to score. 
 
West Virginia second baseman Wetherholt went 2-for-2 with one run scored. 
 
Zach Ehrhard, the Cowboys’ right fielder, went 1-for-2 and earned one run. 
 
Oklahoma State’s Nolan McLean (1-1) started for the Cowboys and pitched six complete innings, with four strikeouts and allowing two runs on two hits. 
 
Juaron Watts-Brown (6-4) earned his sixth win of the season, striking out six batters and allowing just one hit in the last three innings of the ballgame for the Cowboys.
 
West Virginia starter Ben Hampton struck out two batters and gave up two runs on three hits. 
 
Taking the mound for the Mountaineers in the seventh, Carlson Reed (2-1) was credited with the loss after pitching two innings with four strikeouts and allowing the winning run to score off three hits.
 
Oklahoma State will take on the losing team of Game 8 between No. 6 seed Texas Tech and No. 7 seed Oklahoma at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday May 26th, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
