2022-23 Big 12 Men’s Golf Yearly Awards Released

Big 12 individual champion Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech) was announced as the 2022-23 Big 12 Men’s Golf Player of the Year and Christiaan Maas (Texas) claimed Newcomer of the Year to highlight the Conference’s annual awards. Garnering their first career honor, K-State’s Grant Robbins and TCU’s Bill Montigel shared Coach of the Year. The Player and Newcomer Awards were determined by Golfweek/Sagarin rankings after the NCAA Championships while the Coach of the Year Award was voted by the Big 12 men’s golf coaches.

Aberg is the second golfer from Texas Tech to receive the player of the year honor following Fredrick Nilehn in 2018. During his senior campaign, Aberg garnered four wins and finished within the top 10 in all nine of his appearances for the Red Raiders while recording a 68.46 stroke average. The Eslov, Sweden native capped his NCAA career by sweeping the national collegiate golf awards becoming the seventh golfer to claim the Fred Haskins Award, the Jack Nicklaus and the Ben Hogan Award (second straight win) in the same season.

The first Longhorn to be named Newcomer of the Year since 2019, Maas registered five top-10 finishes this season. In 14 appearances, he shot par or better in 23 of 35 rounds, which included 12 rounds in the 60s. The freshman boasted the team-best average score of 70.57 and garnered All-America status with a second team honor.

Robbins coached the Wildcats to four wins this season while placing within the top 10 in all 12 tournaments in his ninth year as head coach. The team procured a program-best 281.45 stroke average, topping last season’s 287.67 average. K-State made its second consecutive appearance at an NCAA Regional where Luke O’Neill was the first Wildcat since 2006 to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Led by Montigel, TCU garnered seven top-five finishes including two wins during the 2022-23 season. The Frogs qualified for their 32nd NCAA Regional in the last 33 seasons, all during Montigel’s 36 years as head coach. In December, he was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame.

The 2022-23 All-Big 12 Team consists of the top 10 golfers in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings after the conclusion of the NCAA Championships. Including the winners of the Player and Newcomer of the Year, the team features four selections from Oklahoma and two selections each from Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech.
