The 2022-23 Big 12 Athlete of the Year nominees will be featured each day at 10 a.m. CT and 2 p.m. CT, listed in alphabetical order by school through Friday, July 28.
Each institution nominated one male and one female athlete of any classification that competed for their institution during the school year. Student-athletes were required to be in good academic standing and had to be from a league-sponsored sport.
The 10 schools that competed during the 2022-23 academic year are eligible.
The winners will be announced Monday, July 31. Stay tuned to Big12Sports.com and the league’s social media platforms to see the rest of the candidates.
This afternoon’s featured candidates are Iowa State’s David Carr and Ashley Joens.
Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year Candidate
David Carr, Wrestling, 165 Pounds
Sr., Canton, Ohio
Accomplishments
- Won his fourth Big 12 title in 2023 and was named the 2023 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Wrestler.
- Finished as the NCAA Runner-Up at 165 pounds and closed the season with a 27-1 record and with 12 wins over wrestlers ranked in the top 15 of FloWrestling’s final poll.
- More than half of his wins (14) came with bonus points, including five pins, three tech falls and six decisions while he allowed only five takedowns on the year and secured 93 for himself.
- He was a selection to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District At-Large Team, First Team Academic All-Big 12 Selection and NWCA scholar All-America team in 2023.
- Compiled 112 hours of community service in 2022-23, the third-most by a Cyclone student-athlete during the year.
Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year Candidate
Ashley Joens, Basketball, Forward
Sr., Iowa City, Iowa
Accomplishments
- Won her third straight Cheryl Miller Award, given annually to the nation’s top small forward. She was named a WBCA All-American, AP Third Team All-American and USBWA Second Team All-American in 2023.
- Inaugural recipient of the Bob Bowlsby Award, given to the two student-athletes (one male and one female) who represent the absolute best in the Big 12 for their leadership and excellence, on and off the field of competition.
- 2023 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Year and a unanimous All-Big 12 First Team member.
- Most Outstanding Player of the 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship, leading ISU to its first title since 2001, averaging 26.7 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game at the Championship.
- Academic All-Big 12 First Team member for the third time in her career, earned her degree in elementary education.
