WACO, Texas – BYU swept the 2024 Big 12 Cross Country Championship team titles Friday morning in Waco, Texas at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. The Cougars won their first Big 12 men’s title in program history and second consecutive women’s title since joining the Conference in 2023. BYU is the fourth Conference member to sweep both Championship titles in Big 12 history joining Colorado (11 times), Iowa State (2017, 2018) and Oklahoma State (2015, 2021, 2022).
The day started with West Virginia’s Ceili McCabe (19:02.60) earning her third Big 12 Championship individual title in four years. McCabe is the third female athlete in Conference history to win three Big 12 Championship individual titles joining Iowa State’s Calie Logue (2018-20) and Texas Tech’s Sally Kipyego (2006-08). Texas Tech’s Juliet Cherubet (19:16.84) finished runner-up followed by WVU’s Joy Naukot (19:18.09) in third and Arizona State’s Judy Chepkoech with the fourth-fastest time of the race (19:32.54). BYU stole the show though with the trio of Lexy Halladay-Lowry, Riley Chamberlain and Taylor Rohatinsky finishing 5-6-7. The Cougars finished with 41 points as they had four athletes in the top 10, six in the top 20 and all 10 in the top 36 finishers.
On the men’s side, Oklahoma State’s Brian Musau took home the men’s title (22:06.91) for the second consecutive year making him the seventh male runner to win back-to-back Big 12 Championship individual titles in program history. Musau becomes the first OSU male runner to do so, joining ISU’s Wesley Kiptoo (2020-21) and Edwin Kurgat (2018-19), TTU’s Kennedy Kithuka (2012-13), KU’s Benson Chesang (2004-05), and Colorado’s Jorge Torres (2001-03) and Adam Goucher (1997-98).
Texas Tech’s Solomon Kipchoge grabbed runner-up with a time of 22:08.48 followed by BYU’s Casey Clinger (22:09.14) in the third slot of the men’s podium. Iowa State’s Robin Kwemoi Bera (22:16.64) and Texas Tech’s Ernest Cheruiyot (22:25.78) rounded out the top five of the men’s race. Clinger was the first of three BYU runners to cross the line within the top-10 as the Cougars completed the sweep with a team score of 41 points.
