Kansas’ Kodey Shojinaga (co-player), TCU’s Anthony Silva (co-player) and Chase Brunson (newcomer) plus Baylor’s Mason Marriott (pitcher) were tabbed as Big 12 baseball weekly award winners for the first week of the season.
Shojinaga hit .462 in the series against Illinois-Chicago, including his first career grand slam in the opener. The infielder went 4-for-6 with two home runs in Friday’s game, his first career multi-HR game. The sophomore from Honolulu followed up with a hit, a walk and a run scored in each of the following two games. The sport management major picked up his first career weekly award with a .533 on-base percentage and a 1.077 slugging percentage for the week.
Silva had two multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 effort in TCU’s wild comeback from down 9-3 against Florida Gulf Coast Friday. His seventh-inning solo shot began the six-run comeback, and he added another RBI in the eighth, his third of the game. In Saturday’s game, the shortstop walked and scored during the seven-run eighth that put the Horned Frogs ahead for good. This is the second weekly award for the sophomore from San Antonio.
Brunson was 6-for-10 in his first three collegiate games, adding four extra-base hits in the Horned Frogs’ sweep of Florida Gulf Coast. The outfielder’s two home runs both helped spark big TCU comebacks on Friday and Saturday, and the San Clemente, California native drove in the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning in the season-opener. For the week, the freshman communications major had a .600 average and a 2.067 OPS while scoring seven runs and driving in four.
Marriott took a no-hitter into the sixth, finishing with 5.2 innings of one-hit ball in the Bears’ opening day game against Nebraska. The righty from Tomball, Texas struck out a career-high 10 batters, although he ended up taking a no-decision and gave up one run—a bequeathed runner after exiting in the sixth. The health, kinesiology and leisure studies major was the first Baylor pitcher to strike out double-digit batters on Opening Day since 2010. It is his first career weekly honor.
