Texas’ Eliot Spizzirri (men’s) and Texas Tech’s Cristina Tiglea (women’s) garnered the Big 12 weekly tennis awards for the seventh week of the spring season as each picked up multiple ranked singles wins.
Spizzirri led Texas to a 2-1 record and two sweeps against ranked opponents as the Longhorns defeated No. 13 Michigan 4-0 and No. 4 South Carolina 5-0 in the 2024 ITA DI National Men’s Indoor Championship. The senior finance major accumulated three top-50 ranked singles wins on the No. 1 court and a top-6 ranked doubles win over the weekend. Spizzirri dropped his opening singles set before rattling off six straight sets to conclude his weekend. He defeated Arizona’s Colton Smith (No. 5) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 to start the weekend before coasting to a win over Michigan’s Gavin Smith (No. 17) 6-1, 6-2. The Greenwich, Connecticut native then ended his singles matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win over South Carolina’s Toby Samuel (No. 50). Spizzirri also added a doubles victory with teammate Cleeve Harper over Arizona’s No.6-ranked pair of Jay Friend and Colton Smith, 6-3. It is Spizzirri’s first award this season and increases his Big 12-record career selections to 11.
Tiglea wrapped up her week with three singles victories on the top court including a match-clinching point against Kansas to help Texas Tech earn the 2024 Round Robin Tournament title. The junior sport management major, who is also earning a minor in advertising, earned ranked wins over Arizona’s Reece Carter (No. 118) 6-0, 6-2 and UCSB’s Amelia Honer (No. 64) 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. She also added a match-clinching point against Kansas’ Maria Titova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Tiglia fell behind 3-1 in the final set before rallying to win the third set 6-4 and clinch the 4-3 victory for the Lady Raiders. She leads Texas Tech with 11 singles wins and six ranked singles victories and is 5-1 on court one. Tiglea and doubles partner Mariya Polishchuk also added a match-clinching doubles point against Arizona’s Teja Tirunelveli and Kayla Wilkins, 6-3, as the singles were played first and then the doubles against the Wildcats. It is her first career Big 12 weekly accolade.
