OU’s Martinez and Garcia Ruiz Sweep Big 12 Tennis Weekly Awards

Oklahoma’s Alex Martinez (men’s) and Julia Garcia Ruiz (women’s) swept the Big 12 weekly tennis awards for the eighth week of the spring season as each picked up ranked singles wins.

Martinez helped Oklahoma’s men’s squad to a 4-3 victory over Cornell with a 7-6(5), 6-1 victory over No. 17 Radu Papoe on the No. 1 court. The interdisciplinary studies major gave the Sooners a 2-1 lead over Cornell with the singles victory and moved him to 5-2 on the season on the top court. He also added a doubles victory with teammate Baptiste Anselmo with a 7-5 victory at the No. 1 doubles court. It is his third weekly award after garnering the accolade twice in the 2022 season.

Garcia Ruiz earned her first career Big 12 distinction after helping the Sooners to two ranked team wins over then-No. 12 San Diego and then-No. 5 NC State. The sophomore finished a combined 3-0 in doubles and singles in the two matchups including 2-0 in ranked singles play. She started with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over San Diego’s Mia Mack (No. 49) before defeating NC State’s No. 30 Abigail Rencheli in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The management information systems major added a shutout doubles win (6-0) with teammate Zdena Safarova on the second court.
