UT’s Braswell and OU’s Garcia Ruiz Secure Big 12 Tennis Weekly Recognition

Texas’ Micah Braswell (men’s) and Oklahoma’s Julia Garcia Ruiz (women’s) were named the Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week for matches ending April 7. It is the second award this season for Garcia Ruiz and the first for Braswell.

Braswell helped Texas secure a share of the Big 12 regular season title with a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles. The Longhorns tallied a pair of top-40 road wins over No. 33 Oklahoma State and No. 11 Oklahoma with a combined score of 10-2. Braswell clinched the win over OU in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) against Kholo Montsi on the No. 2 court. The sport management major added a ranked win against OSU’s No. 78th-ranked Isaac Becroft in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). The senior sports a perfect 16-0 record in dual matches this season. In doubles, he added two wins with teammate Cleeve Harper, including a 6-0 sweep on the No. 3 court against the Sooners. Braswell last earned the Conference’s weekly distinction on February 1, 2022.

Garcia Ruiz amassed two ranked individual wins on the top court for Oklahoma to improve her Conference singles record to 11-0. She began her week by defeating No. 105 Bobo Huang (BYU) 6-0, 6-3, before taking down No. 39 Cristina Tiglea (Texas Tech) 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The management information systems major clinched both wins for the Sooners as they took down No. 26 Texas Tech and No. 36 BYU in Norman. The sophomore added one more win in doubles as she teamed up with Zdena Safarova to win on court two against TTU’s duo of Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk.
