ARLINGTON, Texas – No. 9 TCU (32-19) defeated No. 4 West Virginia (33-21) 5-2 in game two of the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field.
TCU struck first in the third inning after Brody Green tripled to right center field. Following his hit, Chase Brunson grounded out to second, sending Green home and putting the Horned Frogs on the board.
TCU would add another score in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and only one out, Karson Bowen walked to first, advancing Anthony Silva to second, Payton Tolle to third, and Logan Maxwell home, making the score 2-0. The Horned Frogs continued to lead as pitcher Caedmon Parker struck out two Mountaineers in the bottom of the fourth.
With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning, TCU’s Kurtis Byrne grounded into a double play, allowing Brunson to score. West Virginia responded with a home run to left field from Logan Sauve, sending both himself and Ben Lumsden home.
After singling to center field, TCU scored again in the sixth inning as Luke Boyers ran home with help from a single by Ryder Robinson to make it a 4-2 Horned Frog lead. This marked the fourth consecutive score in innings for TCU.
TCU added one more score at the top of the ninth inning as Green made it home for the second time with a home run to left center. The Mountaineers ended the game with a ground out and two strikeouts, giving TCU the win.
TCU’s Sophomore Caedmon Parker (W, 3-1) threw 5.0 innings, giving up two hits, two runs, and two errors while throwing seven strikeouts.
Sophomore Carson Estridge (L, 1-2) threw 3.2 innings for the Mountaineers, giving up four hits, two runs, and two errors while tossing three strikeouts.
TCU will face top-seeded Oklahoma on Wednesday, May 22 at 12:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ while West Virginia will play No. 6 seed Kansas State on Wednesday, May 22 at 9 a.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
