ARLINGTON, Texas – Tenth-seeded Texas Tech (32-24) took down third-seeded Texas (35-21) 6-4 in the final game of the opening day of the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field. The Red Raiders clinched the victory courtesy of a ninth-inning two-run home run from Cade McGee.
Texas got on the board in the first inning after Jared Thomas homered his 15
th time on the season to left field.
TTU's Drew Woodcox responded in the second inning with a homer over to left field to tie the game, marking his 14
th home run on the season.
The Longhorns took back the lead in the third inning on a home run to right field by Jack O’Dowd, his fifth on the season. Furthering the Longhorns' lead, Max Belyeu smacked a two-RBI double through the right side increasing their lead to 4-1.
The Red Raiders closed the gap, 4-4, in the fourth inning with a three-RBI home run from Austin Green, earning him his eighth homer on the season.
The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when McGee launched a two-run homer to left field to secure the lead for Texas Tech.
Junior Kyle Robinson pitched the first 5.1 innings and gave up seven hits, four runs and struck out six. Junior Brendan Lysik pitched 0.1 innings, gave up one hit and struck out one. Sophomore Jacob Rogers pitched 1.1 innings and struck out three. Senior Josh Sanders (W, 5-1) pitched two innings with one hit.
Junior Andre Duplantier II (L, 2-1) threw four innings, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out six.
