English's Eighth Inning Home Run Sends Jayhawks to Semifinals of Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship

ARLINGTON, Texas – Seventh-seeded Kansas (31-22) eliminated ninth-seeded TCU (33-21) 11-10 in the opening game on the fourth day of the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship at Globe Life Field.

The Jayhawks advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2012 after a back-and-forth game against the Horned Frogs. KU sealed a spot in the semifinals with an eighth-inning go-ahead home run to left center by Jake English, his 14th homer of the season.
 
Kansas hit the board in the first inning with a two-RBI single to left field from Jake English. Rolling with the momentum, Chase Diggins hits one to center field for a two-RBI single. John Nett singled to left center for another two-RBI single. Increasing the lead, Kodey Shojinaga doubled down the left field line for three RBIs ending the inning at 9-0.
 
TCU’s Jack Basseer homered to left field in the second inning to get the frogs in the run column. Karson Bowen shortened the gap for the Horned Frogs with a two-RBI home run down the left field line to make it a 9-3 game. 
 
The Horned Frogs kept fighting with a three-RBI homer to left center by Kurtis Byrne in the third inning to make the score 9-6. 
 
KU responded when Shojinaga hit into a double play resulting in Nett scoring in the third inning, raising the Jayhawks lead to 10-6.
 
TCU added another run in the fifth inning with a second home run by Byrne. The homer gave Byrne a season-high four RBIs and brought the score to 10-7. 
 
After a scoreless sixth inning, TCU kicked it into gear. Chase Brunson hit into a double play that allowed Sam Myers to get home. Luke Boyers added to the fire with a two-run homer to right field to tie the game at 10. 
 
For Kansas, Freshman Dominic Voegele pitched the first five innings and gave up seven hits, seven runs and struck out six. Freshman Cooper Moore pitched one inning and struck out one. Junior Tegan Cain pitched one inning, gave up three hits and struck out one. Redshirt senior Hunter Cranton (W, 4-3) pitched two innings with two hits and two strikeouts.
 
TCU Sophomore Braeden Sloan (L, 4-4) threw 0.2 innings, gave up two hits, one run and struck out one.
 
Kansas will play No. 1 seed Oklahoma on Friday, May 24 at 12:30 p.m. CT on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The winner will advance to the Championship final on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
