Arizona State’s Judy Chepkoech (women’s) and Cincinnati’s Patrick Kiprop (men’s) collected the first Big 12 Runner of the Week awards for the 2024 season.
Chepkoech earned her first individual victory in her collegiate debut for the Sun Devils at the George Kyte Classic, hosted by No. 1 Northern Arizona in the USTFCCCA Preseason Women’s Coaches’ Poll. The freshman from Kenya crossed the finish line with a time of 14:09.6, almost 30 seconds ahead of the runner-up to grab the first individual title at the meet for ASU since Chelsea Trotten in 2015. She also is the first Sun Devil to earn Big 12 recognition in ASU’s debut season in the Conference.
Kiprop set a course record at the Sam Bell Invitational with a time of 17:23.96, close to a full minute faster than the runner-up (18:23.92). The freshman from Nairobi, Kenya finished with a pace of 5:46.16 for his first individual win in his Bearcat debut. He helped Cincinnati win the meet spearheading five Bearcats in the top seven. It is his first Big 12 weekly award of his career and the first for Cincinnati since Tyler Wirth on September 5, 2023.
