Four Programs Capture Big 12 Soccer Week Awards

Colorado’s Hope Leyba and TCU’s Seven Castain shared the weekly Big 12 soccer offensive award, while Baylor claimed defensive awards with Hallie Augustyn (defensive) and Azul Alvarez (goalkeeper) and BYU’s Mia Lopez (freshman) rounded out this week’s honors.

Leyba led the league last week with four goals and eight points. The junior tallied her second hat trick of the season as she led the Buffaloes to a 3-1 win over Iowa State before she registered the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to break Houston’s unbeaten streak. Her performance against the Cyclones tabbed the Phoenix native as the first CU player to record multiple hat tricks in the same season, as her first was against UNC Greensboro (Aug. 24).  Leyba, the nation’s leader in goals scored (13), collects her second Big 12 offensive honor this season.

Castain marked the second three-goal performance of her career as the Horned Frogs edged out then-No. 14/9 Kansas 3-2 in Lawrence. She converted a penalty kick in the 24th, before she tallied two goals back-to-back in the 63rd and 65th minutes to help TCU claim its second win over a top 25 team this season. Castain was credited with her fourth game-winning goal of the season, the second-most in the NCAA this season. This is her third honor this season and her second in three weeks.

Augustyn and the Bears went 2-0-0 last week, earning two shutouts during a road trip to the Sunflower State. Baylor earned its second win over a ranked team with a 3-0 win at No. 14/9 KU before recording the same result at K-State. The BU backline held the Jayhawks and the Wildcats scoreless on a combined seven shots on goal in 32 shot attempts. Augustyn played 174 minutes during her second Big 12 weekly award-winning performance, previously earning Freshman of the Week during the 2022 campaign.

Alvarez was the league’s only goalkeeper who didn’t concede a goal last week, while her two clean sheets brought her season total to seven. She had three saves against Kansas and grabbed four at K-State. The Austin, Texas native has played all minutes in goal and holds a 7-1-2 record for the Bears. She leads Big 12 keepers and ranks fifth in the nation with a 0.30 goals-against average. This week’s selection is her third overall Conference weekly honor and her second of the season.

Lopez scored three goals last week, as she was one of three Big 12 players to tally multiple goals. She opened her week by scoring the Cougars’ first goal against West Virginia in the second half, which tied the game at 1 before WVU outlasted the home team 3-2. She then led BYU’s scoring with her first career brace during the 3-0 victory against Cincinnati. In the game against the Bearcats, the freshman from Logan, Utah, netted first-half goals in the 11th and 14th minutes. Lopez is the second BYU player to be named the league’s Freshman of the Week.
