ARIZ’s Friend and ISU’s Kuearum Recognized as Big 12 Players of the Week

Arizona’s Jay Friend (men’s) and Iowa State’s Anna Supapitch Kuearum (women’s) were named the Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for matches ending Feb. 9.

Friend picked up a couple of ranked wins against No. 25 Pepperdine to highlight a 4-0 week. The junior from Tokyo, Japan defeated No. 32 Maxi Homberg (Pepperdine) 6-4, 7-5 after clinching the doubles point for the Wildcats with a 6-4 win over the 51st-ranked duo in the country. Friend added two more wins against Loyola Marymount with a 6-2, 6-4 singles win and a 6-2 doubles win over the Lions to improve to 7-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles this season.

Kuearum added two wins to help the Cyclones win the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, as the Cyclones defeated Iowa in Iowa City for the second time in the last 48 years. She defeated No. 113-ranked Daianne Hayashida 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in singles after clinching the doubles point 6-2 on the top court. The senior improved her singles record to 4-0 against ISU’s rival.

It is both athletes’ first Conference weekly award.
