TCU’s Sawyer Strosnider (player and newcomer) and Utah’s Colter McAnelly (pitcher) garnered the Big 12 Baseball weekly awards for games ending March 23.
Strosnider batted .500 (10-for-20) and recorded eight RBI, six runs, two doubles and three homers. His 10 hits in four games extended his hitting streak to 13 games, which includes at least two hits in 10 of those games. The freshman outfielder recorded his first career home run at Dallas Baptist to start a Horned Frogs’ comeback after trailing 3-0. He opened the series against Texas Tech with a four-hit outing that included two doubles in the 13-2 win over the Red Raiders. In the series finale, Strosnider finished 3-for-5 with three runs, six RBI and two home runs to clinch the weekend. His first homer evened things up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh before he hit the go-ahead shot in the top of the 11
th to put TCU up 7-5. He is the first player this season to be named Big 12 Player of the Week and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
McAnelly tied a program record with 12 strikeouts in the Utes’ series-opening win against Oklahoma State. The 12 strikeouts are the most by a Big 12 pitcher in Conference play this season. The sophomore right-handed pitcher tossed 8.0 scoreless innings and held the Cowboys to five hits. McAnelly faced five left-handed batters and a switch hitter and held them to 1-for-18. He boasts the fourth-lowest ERA (2.23) and opponent batting average (.183) in the league while having the most innings pitched (40.1). It is his third Conference weekly award this season.
