ARIZ’s Friend and OSU’s Komar Recognized as Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week

Arizona’s Jay Friend (men’s) and Oklahoma State’s Anastasiya Komar (women’s) were named the Big 12 Tennis Players of the Week for matches ending March 23.

Friend finished the week 3-0 with all three wins coming against ranked opponents. The junior won both singles matches in straight sets as he took down No. 20 Lui Maxted (TCU) 6-0, 6-2 and No. 101 Oskar Brostrom Poulsen (Baylor) 6-3, 6-4. He also picked up a doubles win with teammate Eric Padgham 7-6(4) over Baylor’s 17th-ranked pair in the country to clinch the doubles point. It is his third Conference weekly award this season.

Komar led Oklahoma State to two Conference wins over ranked teams with a 4-0 week. She started the weekend with a doubles win against Arizona State’s No. 36 pair of Lily Taylor and Patricija Spaka (6-1). In singles play, after dropping the first set in singles, she rallied for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 33 Emilija Tverijonaite (Arizona State). Against Arizona, she picked up her second doubles victory of the week with teammate Rose Marie Nijkamp to remain undefeated in doubles competition in Conference play. The redshirt junior has now won five straight singles matches and five straight doubles matches to sit at 10-5 in singles play and 13-2 in doubles competition.
