Baylor’s Zsombor Velcz (men’s) and UCF’s Jantje Tilbuerger (women’s) earned their first Big 12 weekly tennis awards of their careers for matches through February 15.
Velcz was a vital part in leading Baylor to three top-10 upsets for the first time since the 2021 season. On the doubles court, the senior paired with teammate Alexandru Chirita to take down No. 8 Texas A&M’s No.33-ranked Alex Frusina and Kholo Montsi, 6-2, earning their first ranked double win of the season. He then earned his first singles win of the week in straight sets over the Aggies’ Montsi, 6-4, 6-4. At the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, the No. 38-ranked duo of Velcz and Chirita picked up wins against No. 9 UCF, 6-1 and No. 3 Wake Forest, 6-3. The senior capped off his weekend on court two, defeating Wake Forest’s Aryan Shah, 6-3, 7-6(3).
On the women’s side, Tilbuerger went 4-0 against FIU and Miami (Fla.). Pairing with Marina Gatell for doubles, the duo clinched the doubles point against the Panthers, 6-3, and the Hurricanes, 7-5. The senior won the match for the Knights in singles play, defeating FIU’s Jelena Vico in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Against Miami, Tilbuerger tied the match, 3-3, with a victory over the Hurricanes’ Sofia Rocchetti, 6-2, 6-2. The Ganderkesee, Germany native improved to 5-1 on the singles court. Tilbuerger becomes the first UCF tennis athlete to earn a Big 12 weekly award this season.
