Two Big 12 Golfers Make 2011 Walker Cup Team

Texas freshman Jordan Spieth and Oklahoma State senior Peter Uihlein are two of 10 players named to the 2011 United States Walker Cup Team.

With his selection, Spieth becomes the sixth player in Texas Men’s Golf history to play in the Walker Cup. Spieth joined Tiger Woods as the only golfers to have won multiple U.S. Junior Amateur titles in the 64-year history of the championship with his 6-and-5 win over Chelso Barrett on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club on July 23. His first U.S. Junior Amateur title came in 2009 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

Uihlein is a returning member to the Walker Cup Team after competing in 2009, where he had a 4-0-0 record and helped lead the United States to victory. In college, Uihlein has earned five victories and two top three finishes at the NCAA Championship.  He was also named 2011 Big 12 Player of the Year. He was the recipient of the 2011 Ben Hogan Award, given to the top men’s collegiate golfer in any division.

Completing the 10-man team with Spieth and Uihlein are Blayne Barber, Patrick Cantlay, Harris English, Russell Henly, Kelly Kraft, Patrick Rodgers, Nathan Smith and Chris Williams. The captain of the U.S. Team is Jim Holtgrieve.

The Walker Cup Match will be played Sept. 10-11 at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club in Aberdeen, Scotland.  The biennial match consists of 18 singles matches and eight foursome (alternate-shot) matches over the competition’s two days. The U.S. Team has won the last three Walker Cups and leads the series overall, 34-7-1.
