The Big 12 has released its 2012 women's basketball conference composite schedule.
Regular season conference action begins on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 and will conclude on Sunday, March 4, 2012. Dates may be adjusted after the television schedule is released. Institutions will release their own non-conference schedules once completed.
The 2012 conference schedule features a new double round robin format consisting of 18 games with Conference members playing each other twice. The team(s) that finishes with the best winning percentage in league games will be crowned the Big 12 regular season champion.
The format has also been adjusted for the 2012 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship to be held in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. Two first round matchups will be played on Wednesday, March 7, followed by quarterfinals on Thursday, March 8. Semifinals are scheduled for Friday, March 9, with the final contested on Saturday, March 10. The winner earns the Big 12's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship.
Big 12 women's basketball is coming off another banner season which saw Texas A&M capture the 2011 national title. Since its inception in 1996-97, the Big 12 is the only conference with national championships by two different teams as Baylor picked up the 2005 crown. At least 10 teams competed in postseason play for the second time with the 10 appearances tying for the most among all leagues in 2011.
Conference squads also continued to play in front of packed houses as the Big 12 captured its 12th consecutive NCAA attendance crown while drawing over one-million fans for the fifth consecutive season and sixth time overall.
