The three seniors on Texas' roster - Yvonne Anderson, Ashley Gayle and Ashleigh Fontenette - went into the postseason seeking their first NCAA Tournament victory.

Thanks to future Big 12 Conference member West Virginia, the UT threesome will close their careers without ever advancing past the first round. The eighth-seeded Mountaineers held off a late charge from the Longhorns to post a 68-55 victory Saturday in Norfolk, Va.

"We missed stuff that we know we can make," said Gayle, who led Texas with 11 points and 10 rebounds. "It was a matter of not being focused. We played really hard, but we didn't play as smart as we wanted to."

Texas (18-14) trailed by 15 with 10:25 to play but the Longhorns mounted a 15-3 run. Anderson's 3-pointer with 5:40 remaining pulled UT within 51-48. The Longhorns, who struggled shooting the ball, went scoreless on their next three trips.

West Virginia's Taylor Palmer, who scored a game-high 18 points off the bench, then hit a 3-pointer with 3:41 remaining to give the Mountaineers a 54-48 lead. West Viringia got 34 points from its reserves.

"Taylor Palmer is our shooter," West Virginia coach Mike Carey said. "I was kidding her after the game because she only played 25 minutes and took 16 shots and if she played 40 minutes she would have taken 52 shots. That is what she does though; she is a great player and she hit a really big shot for us."

The Longhorns made just 19-of-68 shots (27.9 percent), shot 5-of-14 from 3-point range and 12-of-20 from the free throw line.

Texas is now 0-4 in NCAA first-round games since 2008, when the Longhorns beat Minnesota, 72-55, in UT coach Gail Goestenkors' first season. The Longhorns then lost to Connecticut in the second round.

The postseason losing streak is getting "very old," Goestenkors said. "I'm proud to be in the NCAA tournament, but I would most certainly like to go further.

"The bottom line is, we didn't make shots. Whether it was field goals or free throws, we struggled to put the ball in the basket."
