In the postseason, expect the unexpected. Princeton probably didn't expect for Kansas State's Branshea Brown to have the best game of her career.

Brown, whose previous career high was 14 points, scored 22 and had seven rebounds to lead the eighth-seeded Wildcats to a 67-64 victory over No. 9 seed Princeton in Bridgeport, Conn., in the opening round of the Kingston (R.I.) Regional Saturday.

So what does Kansas State (20-13) get for that NCAA Tournament victory? A date Monday with top-seeded Connecticut playing 80 miles from its campus. The Wildcats, who had not won in the NCAAs since 2009, haven't advanced to the Sweet 16 since 2004.

"I'm excited to be in the second round," Brown said "It's my last tournament, so I'm going to make the most of it."

Niveen Rasheed had 20 points, and Lauren Edwards and Devona Allgood each had 15 for Princeton (24-5), which lost for the first time in 18 games and for the third consecutive year in the first round of the tournament.

Princeton turned a four-point halftime deficit into a four-point lead with a 10-2 run to start the second half. Brown's layup capped a 14-4 run by Kansas State that put the Wildcats back into control, 49-43, with 9:57 remaining. The Tigers closed to within 53-52 with just under seven minutes remaining but Kansas State never relinquished the lead.

"I thought our post game was definitely the difference, as I think most people would agree that in NCAA play you have to have a quality presence on the inside," Kansas State coach Deb Patterson said. "We were able to establish that today. Branshea Brown was a target in the middle and gave us chance today when quite frankly we weren't that sharp on the perimeter."

Jalana Childs added 15 points and eight for Kansas State, which was out-rebounded 40-29.
