WVU and KU Claim First Swimming and Diving Awards

Hunter Armstrong, Nick Cover and Emily Haimes of West Virginia along with Jiayu Chen of Kansas were named the first Big 12 swimming and diving award winners of the 2019-20 season.

Armstrong received Men’s Swimmer of the Week after the opening weekend of his collegiate career. The freshman led the Mountaineers in victories, taking home top honors in the 100 freestyle and as a member of the 400 free relay team.

Haimes was awarded Women’s Swimmer of the Week for her three-victory weekend, including one in her first collegiate race with a 23.49-time in the 50 freestyle. Additionally, the London native placed first in the 100 butterfly, the 400 freestyle relay, and finished second in the 100 freestyle.

Cover was honored as the Men’s Diver of the Week to begin the season for the second consecutive year. The sophomore opened the 2019-20 slate with a victory in the 3-meter, scoring a 335.03 which was good enough to be an NCAA qualifying score. Cover added a second place finish in the 1-meter dive.

Chen received Women’s Diver of the Week honors, becoming the third freshman to earn an award on opening weekend. The newcomer made a strong collegiate debut, taking top honors in the 1-meter dive with a 285.80 score. The Zhanijang, China, native closed the weekend with a 287.20 score in the 3-meter, good for another first place finish and her second title of the weekend.
