Texas Tech, West Virginia Pick Up First Weekly Baseball Awards

A pair of Texas Tech freshmen in Nate Rombach and Jace Jung joined West Virginia’s Jackson Wolf as the season’s first Big 12 Baseball Players of the Week. Rombach was named Player of the Week, Jung garnered Newcomer of the Week and Wolf was selected as Pitcher of the Week. Awards are chosen by a five-person media panel.

Rombach burst onto the Big 12 baseball scene, tying for the nation’s lead by hitting five home runs over the weekend, including a 3-HR game against Houston Baptist on Saturday. The freshman backstop tallied seven hits and 15 RBIs in TTU’s four wins to open the season.

Wolf pitched 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball against Jacksonville before surrendering his first and only hit of the day. The junior lefty finished with a career-high eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work, earning the Opening Day victory for the Mountaineers.

Jung recorded 13 RBIs in his first weekend as a Red Raider, second in the Big 12 only to his teammate Rombach. He was 8-for-16 at the plate with two home runs, helping Tech to an undefeated start to the year.

All three recipients are first-time honorees.
