A pair of Texas Tech standouts, along with student-athletes from Texas and Oklahoma State were honored with Week 3 Big 12 Baseball Awards.

Texas Tech’s Jace Jung was tabbed the Big 12 Player of the Week, while Texas right-hander Ty Madden collected his second-straight Pitcher of the Week award. Oklahoma State’s Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Texas Tech’s Patrick Monteverde shared Newcomer of the Week honors. A five-person media panel selects the honorees.

Jung led the conference with 14 RBIs and ranked in the top-two in the league last week in hits (8), runs (8), homers (3), slugging percentage (1.118) and total bases (19).  He hit the go-ahead three-run double in the seventh inning Sunday against TAMUCC, while his 5-RBI game against Texas Southern on March 3 matched the most by a Big 12 player this season.

Madden tossed a complete game shutout with a career-high 14 strikeouts against Houston on March 5. The right-hander allowed just two hits and four total base runners in his second career complete game. The complete game shutout was the first by a Longhorn pitcher since 2017.

Encarnacion-Strand led the Cowboys to a 3-0-1 week, which included starting the season 9-0. , The sophomore homered in three of the four games and led OSU with eight RBIs. He turned in an .867 slugging percentage on the week. He registered a two-run homer performance against Missouri State and hit .300 (3-of-10) with two home runs and six RBIs in the weekend series against Grand Canyon.

Monteverde tossed seven shutout innings in  the victory over Sam Houston State at the Shriners Hospitals College Classic. He struck out nine and did not issue a walk. He has not allowed a run in 18.0 innings across three starts, becoming the first Red Raider since 2015 with a scoreless streak of more than 15 innings.

This is Madden’s second award of the season, while the remaining three are first-time honorees for their respective awards.
