Ayoka Lee (Kansas State) was tabbed as the top player in women’s college basketball over the past week, earning the USBWA’s Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s National Player of the Week and the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week awards. Kelbie Washington (Oklahoma) was the USBWA’s Tamika Catchings Women’s National Freshman Player of the Week.
Lee earned Big 12 Player of the Week accolades Monday for her 32-point, 10-rebound performance in a 68-59 win against then-No. 10 Baylor. Lee had a 28-point outburst in the second half, and remained efficient, making 11 of her 16 shots from the field and 10-of-13 free throws. This is Lee’s third USBWA weekly honor, after being twice selected as the organization’s Freshman of the Week in 2019-20. It is Lee’s first weekly honor from the Naismith Award.
Washington was the Conference’s Freshman of the Week, averaging 10.5 points, 10.5 assists and maintaining a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio in two Oklahoma wins. She had 11 points, 14 assists, six rebounds and five steals against Wichita State. In the Big 12 opener against Texas Tech, she had 10 points with seven assists. It is Washington’s first weekly honor from the USBWA, and she is the second consecutive Big 12 freshman to earn the recognition, following Rori Harmon’s (Texas) selection on Dec. 27.
