IRVING, Texas – Baylor’s NaLyssa Smith (Player) and Kansas State’s Serena Sundell (Freshman) each earned Big 12 women’s basketball honors for the second consecutive week, as voted on by a five-person media panel for games ending Mar. 6, the final week of the regular season.
Smith led BU to two wins that clinched the Bears’ 12
th consecutive Big 12 regular season crown. She became the first Division I player since 2013 to have 25 points and 20 rebounds in a top-10 matchup with a 28-point, 20-rebound performance against No. 8 Iowa State. The senior from Converse, Texas posted a career-high 35 points against Texas Tech to clinch the outright regular season title. For the week, Smith averaged Conference-best 31.5 points and 16.0 rebounds per game, in addition to a 66.7 field goal percentage. It is the seventh Player of the Week honor of her career, and her fourth this season.
Sundell averaged 16.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in the final week of the regular season. She played 49 minutes in K-State’s double-overtime game against West Virginia, scoring 15 points with seven assists and six rebounds. She had a career-high five 3-pointers in an 18-point outing at TCU, helping the Wildcats to a 61-50 win. The Maryville, Missouri native earned her fifth Freshman of the Week award of the season, and closed the year with four consecutive 15-point games.
