Texas’ Pierceson Coody (Men’s) and Texas Tech’s Gala Dumez (Women’s) were announced as the March Big 12 Golfers of the Month. Coody is the first Longhorn to secure the honor this academic year while Dumez is the second consecutive Red Raider to bring home the award.
Coody returned from an injury sustained in the fall to claim his first monthly honor. The 2021 Big 12 Men’s Golf Player of the Year won medalist honors by six strokes at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational. He had a three-round score of 17-under-par (67-66-66) to earn his second career collegiate victory. The senior’s performance marked a tie for the second-best 54-hole total vs. par in program history, just one stroke shy of Beau Hossler’s 18-under at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational during the 2015-16 season. Coody’s three-round total of 199 tied the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history, trailing only the 196 by Doug Ghim at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional and the 197 by Hossler. Texas earned the team title by 26 strokes over runner-up and second-ranked Oklahoma State. The Longhorns registered a three-round score of 50-under par 814 (272-266-276) and set a school record for low 54-hole total vs. par, besting the 45-under-par 819 recorded at the 2016 NCAA Nashville Regional.
Dumez recorded a pair of top-five finishes en route to leading No. 20 Texas Tech to a memorable month of March that featured a pair of team titles at the Trinity Forest Invitational and Mountain View Collegiate. The sophomore from France compiled a 71.0 stroke average throughout the month and finished in the top-five for the third and fourth times this season. Texas Tech notched its first two team titles of the season, combining to shoot 25-under-par 839 to rally and win the Mountain View Collegiate, marking the second time this season the Red Raiders have snapped their 54-hole scoring record. Texas Tech topped a talented top-half of the field to win the title, besting the likes of then-No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 7 San Jose State, No. 10 Florida and No. 12 Arkansas after rallying from three strokes down to start the final round. Dumez leads TTU with five top-10 finishes this season while averaging 71.9 strokes per round over nine events. This is her second Big 12 monthly accolade in her career.
