Texas’ Luke Hobson (swimmer), Noah Duperre (diver) and Will Modglin (newcomer) took home the men’s Big 12 Swimming and Diving weekly awards while Emma Sticklen (swimmer), Bridget O’Neil (diver) and Erin Gemmell (newcomer) earned the women’s accolades. Five of the six recipients have received Conference honors previously with one of them having already earned recognition this season.
Hobson recorded three first-place finishes in the Longhorns’ dual meet against TCU. The junior advertising major tallied individual wins in the 200 free (1:36.81) and the 200 back (1:48.03) while swimming the anchor leg in the 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:29.15. It is Hobson’s fifth career weekly Conference award after earning three Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors his freshman year and one Big 12 Swimmer of the Week on February 8, 2023.
Sticklen ended the meet with three gold medals including one in the meet-opening race in the 200 medley relay. The exercise science major swam the third leg and helped Texas’ “A” relay clock a winning time of 1:37.29. In her first individual race of the day, the senior recorded a top-place finish in the 100 back behind a top-20 NCAA time this season of 53.29. Sticklen concluded her day by achieving the No. 6 NCAA time in the 100 fly. It is Sticklen’s fourth Big 12 Swimmer of the Week award and first this season.
Duperre recorded 13 points for Texas as he finished first in the 3-meter dive and second in the 1-meter. His score of 421.28 in the 3-meter was nearly 20 points more than the runner-up while his 1-meter performance was over 50 points higher than third place. This is the 2022-23 Big 12 Diver of the Year’s fifth weekly award and first of this season.
O’Neil swept the women’s diving events as she won by over 24 points in the 3-meter and nearly 50 points in the 1-meter. The speech and language pathology major recorded scores of 365.85 in the 3-meter and 351.83 in the 1-meter. The six-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member has won Big 12 Diver of the Week eight times now, including five times in the 2022-23 season.
Modglin collected his second Conference award in his second meet of the season. The freshman who is interested in majoring in sport management, opened the meet as the anchor leg on the winning Texas A relay in the 200 medley (1:29.15). He added winning performances in the 100 back (47.50) and the 100 free (44.93). It is Modglin’s first Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolade after winning the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week on October. 11.
Gemmell earned her first career Conference award as she totaled two first-place finishes and one runner-up. The freshman swam the anchor leg on the Texas “B” relay for the 200 medley relay as they clocked a time of 1:39.37. The business major also secured her first two wins in the 200 fly (2:00.71) and 100 free (49.30) in the first competition of her collegiate career.
