BYU, TCU Take Home First Big 12 Weekly S&D Accolades

TCU’s Olivia Rhodes (swimmer), Anna Kwong (diver) and Nina Vadovicova (newcomer) swept the first set of women’s Big 12 Swimming and Diving weekly awards while BYU’s Mickey Strauss (diver) and Jordan Tiffany (newcomer) garnered the first two Conference awards for BYU this season on the men’s side. TCU’s Piotr Sadlowski rounded out the men’s awards with Swimmer of the Week.

Sadlowski highlighted his meet at the FSU Classic by clocking the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 100 fly. The graduate student, who is pursuing his master’s degree in liberal arts, logged a time of 47.96 to secure the gold medal in the 100 fly, .33 seconds faster than the runner-up. It is his third career weekly Conference award.

Rhodes earned her third career Big 12 weekly award after collecting two top-two finishes against Florida State, Georgia Tech and Liberty. She finished in 51.57 in the 100 free for her first win of the season and 23.54 in the 50 free (second place). The Allied Health Science major also picked up the Conference’s women’s swimmer of the week on January 11, 2023 and newcomer of the week on October 6, 2021.

Strauss swept the diving events at the Intermountain Shootout to help defeat both Air Force and Colorado Mesa. The senior recorded a score of 300.90 on the 1-meter and 513.05 on the 3-meter. It is the first Big 12 award for the Physical Education Teaching student in BYU’s inaugural Big 12 season after winning the 2023 MPSF Platform title.

Kwong accumulated her first Conference award of the season and sixth of her career after her performance on the 3-meter. The biology major recorded her first zone cut of the season with a score of 297.35 to earn the gold medal. She also finished second in the 1-meter with a score of 246.3.

Tiffany tallied five first-place finishes in his first meet with the Cougars after transferring from Tennessee. The Human Resources major broke the school record in the 50 fly with a time of 21.68 before nearly breaking the program record in the 100 fly. He touched the wall to secure a time of 47.11, the second-fastest all-time in BYU history behind only former Cougar Javier Nicolas Matta’s 46.40. The junior also picked up wins in the 400 medley relay (3:18.38), 50 free (20.70) and 200 free relay (1:22.17).

Vadovicova accumulated four top-four finishes in her first collegiate meet. The freshman from Slovakia highlighted her meet with a 2:16.74 performance in the 200 breast for second place. The kinesiology major joins current teammates Lauren Cey, Alessandra Senis, Rylee Moore and Olivia Rhodes as the TCU swimmers to win the Conference’s Women’s Newcomer of the Week award.
