BYU’s Luigi Riva (swimmer) and Joseph Pyon (newcomer) collected the men’s Big 12 Swimming and Diving weekly awards while Tahis Ibáñez (swimmer) and Annie Reichner (newcomer) garnered the women’s awards for the Cougars.
Riva scored 60 of the Cougars’ 649 team points as BYU took home the team title at the FIU Spring Invite in Miami. The economics major from Milan, Italy captured first place in both the 50 free (20.55) and 100 free (45.30). It is his first career Big 12 weekly award.
Ibáñez tied for the team-high with 40 points as BYU recorded a second-place finish out of a total of nine women’s teams. The plant and landscape systems major entered the meet as the 13 seed in the 50 fly before winning the event with a personal-best time of 25.66, 0.3 seconds faster than the runner-up. It is the junior’s first Big 12 accolade of her career.
Pyon made a return to his home state of Florida as he advanced to the semifinal of the 50 fly before winning the 100 fly. The business major set a personal-best time of 21.83 in the 50 fly in the opening round. He highlighted his meet by clocking a 50.21 winning time in the 100 fly.
Reichner rounded out the awards for BYU after recording the third-most points on the team with 37 to earn her first career Big 12 award. The freshman delivered the third overall win for the day for the Cougars when she clocked a time of 26.83 in the 50 back, 0.4 seconds off her quarterfinals time.
